چکیده

The challenge of model checking of isolated software components becomes more and more relevant with the boom of componentoriented technologies [20]. An important issue here is how to verify an open model representing an isolated software component (also referred as the missing environment problem in [17]). In this paper, we propose on-the-fly simulation of the component environment to address the issue. We employ behavior protocols [18] and a system coordinating two model checkers: Java PathFinder [4] and BPChecker [15]. This approach allows us to enclose the model representing the behavior of a given component and consequently to exhaustively verify the model. Our solution was implemented as the Carmen tool [1]. We demonstrate scalability of our approach on real-life examples and show that, in comparison with the COMBAT model checker [17], we bring better performance, and also exhaustive and correct verification.

Reachability checking in complex and concurrent software systems using intelligent search methods

Software system verification is an efficient technique for ensuring the correctness of a software product, especially in safety-critical systems in which a small bug may have disastrous consequences. The goal of software verification is to ensure that the product fulfills the requirements. Studies show that the cost of finding and fixing errors in design time is less than finding and fixing the...

Reliable Design of Concurrent Software

Conventional static and dynamic testing techniques quickly break down if they are applied to distributed systems software. The bugs in such systems are usually triggered by irreproducible event sequences that can make debugging a nightmare. There are still tools that can help a programmer build a reliable system. One of the most popular such tools is the SPIN model checker. This article explain...

Model Checking of Software Components: Making Java PathFinder Cooperate with Behavior Protocol Checker

Although there exist several software model checkers that check the code against properties specified e.g. via a temporal logic and assertions, or just verifying low-level properties (like unhandled exceptions), none of them supports checking of software components against a high-level behavior specification. We present our approach to model checking of software components implemented in Java a...

A Symbolic Model Checker for Testing ASTRAL Real-Time Specifications

ASTRAL is a high-level formal specification language for real-time (infinite state) systems. It is provided with structuring mechanisms that allow one to build modularized specifications of complex real-time systems with layering. In this paper, the methods and techniques used in the prototype implementation of the ASTRAL symbolic model checker, which is a component of the ASTRAL Software Devel...

Software Component Verification: On Translating Behavior Protocols to Promela∗ Technical Report

Using software components is a modern approach for building extensible and reliable applications. To ensure high dependability, a component application should undergo verification, e.g. model checking, to prove it has certain properties. The implementation of an application is usually too complex to be verified at a formal level; therefore, a model being an abstraction of the implementation is ...
